The ego, the Self and the lifeline between them
The Individuation Journey · Shawn Arnott
WHERE WE LEFT OFF
A small room in a very large house
Your everyday self is one lit room. Individuation is the slow discovery of the rest of the house, and of how it all holds together.
Before we go on: take a moment with your journal from last week. What stood out?
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THIS MODULE
Three words for the whole journey
THE LIT ROOM
Ego
The centre of what you're aware of: the part of you that says "I".
THE WHOLE HOUSE
Self
The whole of who you are, and its deepest organizing centre.
THE PASSAGEWAY
Ego-Self axis
The living connection between the two. Our lifeline.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THE REST OF THE HOUSE
The conscious and the unconscious
Conscious
Whatever you're aware of right now: thoughts, feelings, memories you can call up.
Personal unconscious
What you've forgotten, pushed away or never noticed from your own life.
Collective unconscious
Deep patterns shared by all humans, which Jung called archetypes.
The unconscious shows itself indirectly: in dreams, strong reactions, slips, fantasies and the stories that move us.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THE LIT ROOM
The ego: the one who says "I"
The centre of consciousness: your sense of identity, continuity and choice.
It's necessary
A strong, flexible ego lets us work, love, choose and reflect.
It's partial
It knows only a fraction of the psyche, yet easily mistakes itself for the whole.
It's made, over time
It grows gradually out of a deeper, original wholeness.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THE WHOLE HOUSE
The Self: centre and circumference
The totality of the psyche, and its deepest organizing centre, at the same time.
It includes the ego, yet is far larger. It's experienced as something greater than "me" that is nonetheless most truly me.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
RECOGNIZING IT
How the Self shows up in dreams and images
Circles and centres
Mandalas, round gardens, a squared circle, a city with a centre.
Wise or sacred figures
An elder, a guide, a divine child, a figure of calm authority.
Precious things
A jewel, a pearl, gold, a treasure that is hard to reach.
Moments of meaning
A sense of being guided, held or deeply in the right place.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THE PASSAGEWAY
The ego-Self axis: our lifeline
The vital connection that keeps the ego steady, and lets it grow.
- A path of communication between conscious and unconscious
- A source of stability under stress
- The channel through which we feel accepted
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
IN EVERYDAY LIFE
How the lifeline feels from the inside
When it feels connected
- A basic sense that you're allowed to be you
- Resilience: you bend under stress and recover
- Life feels meaningful, even when it's hard
- Curiosity about dreams and inner life
When it feels strained
- A feeling of being unworthy or unwanted
- Emptiness, or a sense that nothing matters
- Brittleness: small setbacks feel crushing
- Feeling cut off from yourself and others
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
WHERE IT BEGINS
The lifeline is first formed in relationship
i
Through caregivers
A young child first meets the Self through the people who care for them.
ii
Limits and love
Growth needs both: being told "no", and being accepted again afterwards.
iii
Repair is possible
Later relationships of real acceptance can help restore the connection.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
ACROSS A LIFETIME
Growing apart, and growing aware
Beginning
All is Self. The ego is only a seed.
Emerging
The ego takes shape, still largely merged with the Self.
Maturing
The ego stands on its own, and the lifeline comes into view.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
A STORY TO HOLD
The serpent that swallows its tail
The uroboros: an ancient image of wholeness before anything was separated.
It stands for where we all begin, and for the longing for paradise that stays with us.
The Individuation Journey · Module 1 · Foundations
THE HEART OF IT
What flows along the lifeline is acceptance.
The Self can hold every part of you. The more of that acceptance reaches the ego, the steadier and freer you become.
THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE
A circle a day
1
Start with an empty circle
Use the circles in your workbook, or draw your own.
2
Fill it without planning
Shapes, colours, lines. Let your hand lead. No skill needed.
3
Date it and add a word
One word for how you felt before and after.
4
Look back at week's end
Lay them side by side and notice what changes.
Keep your journal going too. Your workbook adds one new question each day.
