The Individuation Journey

An introduction to becoming whole, guided by the work of C. G. Jung and Edward F. Edinger

Shawn Arnott · psychedelicbuddhist.com

WHAT WE'RE EXPLORING

What is individuation?

The lifelong process of becoming a whole person: conscious of more of who you are, and in living relationship with something larger than your everyday self.

For Jung, this meant realizing the person you already are underneath, rather than building a better or more perfect version of yourself.

OUR GUIDES

Two guides for the journey

1875 – 1961

Carl Gustav Jung

Swiss psychiatrist and founder of analytical psychology. He gave us the language of the ego, the Self, archetypes and individuation.

1922 – 1998

Edward F. Edinger

American psychiatrist and Jungian analyst. His book Ego and Archetype (1972) maps how our relationship with the Self develops across a lifetime.

WHY NOW

What brings people to this work

A sense that something is missing

Life looks fine from the outside, yet something feels unlived.

Patterns that keep repeating

The same conflicts, choices or relationships, again and again.

Dreams that won't let go

Images that linger for days and seem to be asking for attention.

A threshold in life

Midlife, loss, illness, a move, or the end of one chapter.

THE MAP

The cycle at the heart of this course

Self the larger whole Inflation Alienation Turning point Reconnection

Growth moves in a loop we travel many times, each turn adding a little more consciousness.

Over time, the loop can give way to a conscious, ongoing dialogue between the ego and the Self.

Adapted from Edinger, Ego and Archetype, ch. 2, “The Psychic Life Cycle,” fig. 5, p. 41

HOW EACH MODULE WORKS

The rhythm of each module

01

Learn

Watch the presentation: one idea, one story, one image to carry with you.

02

Reflect

Open your workbook to the matching pages and write slowly and honestly.

03

Return

Live with it for the week. Notice dreams, strong reactions and coincidences.

A WORD ON PACE

Go slowly. One module a week is plenty.

The unconscious keeps its own time. Give each module room to settle before you move on.

SETTING EXPECTATIONS

What this course is, and what it isn't

This course is

  • An introduction to Jungian ideas in plain language
  • A structured companion for self-reflection
  • An invitation to pay attention to your inner life

This course isn't

  • Therapy or Jungian analysis
  • A way to diagnose yourself or others
  • A replacement for professional support

LOOKING AFTER YOURSELF

Caring for yourself along the way

Inner work can stir up strong feelings and old memories. That's part of the process, and it deserves care.

If you're in immediate danger, contact your local emergency number. You'll find a support page in your workbook.

Please reach out for support if you notice

  • Despair or emptiness that doesn't lift
  • Feeling cut off from reality or from other people
  • Thoughts of harming yourself

A therapist, your doctor, a crisis line or someone you trust can help.

YOUR FIRST PRACTICE

Begin a journal

1

Date each entry

So you can trace patterns over time.

2

Write three lines about your day

What happened, and how it felt.

3

Record any dream

Even a single image or feeling counts.

4

Note one strong reaction

A moment that stirred more than it seemed to warrant.

Five minutes a day is enough. Showing up regularly matters more than writing a lot.
