When the small self grows too large
The Individuation Journey · Shawn Arnott
WHERE WE ARE
The first stage of the cycle
Every turn of the cycle begins here, with the ego taking on more than its share.
We don't pass through inflation once. We return to it at every new stage of growth, all our lives.

THE DEFINITION
What inflation actually means
Something small, the ego, takes on the qualities of something far larger, the Self, and is blown up beyond its proper size.
Not the same as ego
The ego is healthy and necessary. Inflation is the ego mistaking itself for the whole.
Not always loud
It can look like certainty, entitlement, or an unshakeable sense of being the exception.
Mostly unconscious
We rarely feel inflated. We just feel right.

WHERE IT STARTS
We are all born inflated
The Self is born. The ego is made. In the beginning, all is Self.
An infant has no separate "I" yet. Its whole being is arranged around an unspoken assumption of being the centre of everything.
That first wholeness is why we all carry a nostalgia for our origins, and why paradise stories move us.

A STORY TO HOLD
The garden, and the fruit
THE GARDEN
A circle with four rivers and a tree at its centre: an image of wholeness, before conflict, before awareness.
THE PROMISE
The serpent's offer is inflation itself: eat, and your eyes will open, and you will be like God.
THE FRUIT
Knowledge of good and evil: awareness of opposites, which is what consciousness is.
Passive inflation becomes active the moment it turns into a deed. And the deed has consequences.

THE SAME STORY, TOLD TWICE
Prometheus steals the fire
| In the garden | On the mountain | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| God withholds the fruit | Zeus withholds fire | Consciousness is not simply given to us |
| Adam and Eve take it anyway | Prometheus steals it | It is taken by a willful act against authority |
| Exile, labour, death | A wound that never heals | Knowing has a lasting cost |
The vulture eats by day and the liver restores by night: each night we return to the wholeness we came from, and it heals us.

THE HEART OF IT
Becoming conscious is a crime. It is also a necessary one.
To emerge at all, the ego has to set itself against the unconscious it came from, and claim its own ground by an inflated act.
IN EVERYDAY LIFE
The crime is rarely against the gods
In daily life it feels like a rebellion against whoever holds authority in your world.
Against your family
"I can't disappoint my parents." The step that would be your own is the one that feels forbidden.
Against the group
Any move toward being yourself challenges your place in a church, a party, a workplace, a nation.
The guilt that follows
Because it is a real break with the old order, real guilt and anxiety come with it.
The cost of not acting
Development can stall for years at exactly the point where the step needs taking.
The Individuation Journey · Module 2 · Inflation
THE OTHER SIDE
Icarus, and flying too high
"Don't set your own course." He set it anyway, and the wax melted.
Sometimes an inflated act wins us a new level of life. Sometimes it is simply foolhardy. The difference is whether we know what we are doing yet.
Depending on the wisdom of someone further along is often an accurate reading of reality, not weakness.

THE GREEK VIEW
Hybris, aidos and nemesis
Hybris
Claiming for yourself what belongs to the gods: crossing the barriers a reverent person would not cross.
Aidos
Reverence for powers greater than yourself, and the shame felt when they are transgressed.
Nemesis
The reaction that follows when reverence is missing. The correction that arrives uninvited.
Polycrates was so fortunate that a friend begged him to throw away his most precious possession, just to suffer something.

MANY FORMS
The everyday faces of inflation
Being right
Certainty that admits no other view.
The exception
The ordinary rules and limits apply to other people.
The illusion of time
A quiet assumption that there will always be more of it.
Pleasure without limit
Treating instinctive energy as a personal possession.
Pronouncements
Opinions delivered as verdicts, as if a deity were speaking.
Too much of anything
Too much humility counts as much as too much pride.
The Individuation Journey · Module 2 · Inflation
THE SURPRISING ONE
Negative inflation
"No one in the world is as guilty as I am." That is not humility. It is the same swelling, turned inside out.
An unbounded sense of guilt or suffering claims a special status just as surely as grandiosity does. Being uniquely terrible is still being unique.

HOLDING BOTH
Risky and necessary at once
When it serves growth
- The step is yours to take, and overdue
- You have some real ground under you
- You can hear a warning without dismissing it
When it sets up a fall
- You feel exempt from ordinary limits
- Advice from anyone feels like an insult
- The certainty is total, and recent
Which side you are on depends on the person and the moment, not on the act itself.

THIS WEEK'S PRACTICE
Too big, too small
1
Catch the moments
Each day, note once when you felt larger than life, and once when you felt smaller than you are.
2
Watch for certainty
The feeling of being obviously right is the easiest form to catch in the act.
3
Name your forbidden step
The one you keep not taking because of who it would disappoint.
4
Keep the journal going
Dreams of flying, falling or heights are worth noting this week.
Noticing, not fixing. You are gathering evidence about your own pattern.
